BackFire
Plus was recently introduced to the swine industry to support veterinarian
interest in oral deterrents. Oral deterrent products are management aids
to prevent animals from developing oral vices. Swine naturally use their
mouths and noses to investigate their surroundings. Under certain circumstances,
natural curiosity turns to aggressive and destructive chewing. Biting
pen mate’s tails is a common result of this natural curiosity that should
be stopped before it turns destructive. Backfire Plus is not a medication;
it is recognizably strong-smelling and distasteful, so it stops oral
vices at the investigation stage. Companion animal Veterinarians use
similar flavor technologies to stop animals from licking or chewing their
skin, bandages, casts, or catheters. Other examples include horses and
pigs chewing fences or housing materials, squirrels chewing bird feeders,
and raccoons opening trash receptacles.
BackFire Plus is a liquid, packaged in one-liter spray bottles so it is easily sprayed on the surface to be protected. While it is not intended to be consumed, the principal deterrent ingredients are natural pepper (capsaicin) extracts that are Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) by FDA in the Code of Federal Regulations 582.1-582.5. Other ingredients include bitter flavors, oil-based carriers and surfactants that help it temporarily adhere to surfaces, even when wet.
Backfire Plus contains a natural orange pigment, so it may stain some surfaces. This pigmentation also serves as a compliance monitor to mark treated animals. It can be easily washed off with soap and water.
The pepper extracts in BackFire Plus are irritating to the eyes and skin. Wear eye and skin protection, and do not breathe the sprayed mist.
